Climate & Sandstorms Calculator Week-by-week

Khamsin Probability by Week and Governorate

Khamsin — Arabic for "fifty" — is the spring sandstorm season that arrives between mid-March and mid-May. Pick your week, pick your governorate, get a per-window probability, and a ground alternate for the day an episode cancels your outdoor plan.

What this solves

If you are planning a March or April trip to Egypt, the single largest uncontrollable variable is the khamsin — a 2-to-4 day sandstorm that the Egyptian Meteorological Authority issues in advance only 24 to 48 hours ahead of time. The pattern is well-studied: a low-pressure system moves east across the Sahara, picks up fine Saharan sand and dust, and dumps it on the eastern delta and the Levant. Most years deliver 6 to 10 khamsin storms across the season, distributed roughly weekly. By governorate the pattern is uneven: the Cairo-Delta-Sinai-north-coast axis is hit the hardest, while Aswan and Luxor see fewer but bigger storms because their upstream air mass travels further before arrival.

What this calculator does is fold three of the same things: your arrival week (any one of 12 spring weeks from the first week of March to the second week of May), your governorate, and your trip focus (sightseeing, cruise, balloon, desert, photography). It returns a per-cell probability of an active khamsin window during your trip, then a "ground alternate" — a museum or covered indoor venue — for the day the storm hits. The output is honest: it does not pretend to forecast a specific storm on a specific date. It gives you the climatological expectation and a backup.

Cells are probability of at least one khamsin day during that week in that governorate, expressed as a percentage (L = low <25%, M = medium 25–60%, H = high >60%). Baseline year: 2024–2025 climatology.

Limitations

  1. Khamsin onset is short-notice. The EMA issues 24–48 hour warnings. A 60% climatological probability is not a forecast.
  2. Balloon is the activity most affected. Luxor balloons need < 12 km/h surface wind and clear visibility. A 35 km/h khamsin day cancels all flights. A 60% probability week means at least one of your days is likely a no-fly day.
  3. Western Desert dust ≠ Cairo khamsin. A Siwa dust day is fine dust haze at 35 °C, not a 50 km/h sand blast. Don't over-shift to "desert oasis is safer" — the experience is different.
  4. Forecast for the 2026 season is not yet a single number. Spring 2026 is forecast as a slightly elevated-risk year by EMA (El Niño residual). Treat all cells as +5–10 percentage points higher than the long-term baseline.
  5. The matrix is directional. North-coast governorates see late-March through mid-April peaks; the upper-Egypt regions see April through mid-May peaks. Travel south if you must avoid the worst week.

FAQ

What does "khamsin" actually mean?

Khamsin is the Arabic word for "fifty". It refers to the approximate number of days the phenomenon can occur each spring. The storms themselves last 2–4 days each, and a year gives 6–10 storms over the season — so the season is more accurately 18–30 "storm hours" out of a 60-day window.

Is khamsin dangerous?

For healthy adults it is unpleasant, not dangerous. People with asthma, COPD, or severe dust allergies should monitor the EMA hourly AQI & forecast and keep an N95 mask available. Avoid contact lenses during outdoor visits.

Will the GEM close for khamsin?

Almost never. The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is fully indoor and climate-controlled. It is the canonical khamsin-day destination — see the ground-alternate table for full cost and ticket reference. Tahrir Egyptian Museum is also indoor but smaller.

Will the balloon cruise?

Yes — at the first sign of khamsin (≥25 km/h surface wind), all Luxor balloon flights are cancelled and refunded. Your operator texts the morning of. There is no appeal; aviation safety law is final.

What about Nile cruise sailing?

Large cruise ships are mostly unaffected — they sail through mild khamsin days. Feluccas and small motorboats are grounded in heavy khamsin. A day-of-notice at the dock is normal.
