What this solves
Most Giza days go wrong in the same way: a tourist arrives between 10 and 11, queues 20 min at the Great Pyramid entrance, then wanders out at 3 pm with sore knees, no pyramid-interior shot, and a sunset at the wrong pyramid. The fix is to either (a) enter the plateau at 8 am and finish before the cruise-bus wave, or (b) enter at 2 pm and skip the interior in favour of Sound & Light at sunset.
This optimizer assumes you control three things: arrival time, which stops you actually want, and when you must leave. Everything else (queue times, sunset direction, exit ramp) is derived.
The calculator
How to read results
- The numbers are minutes, not promises. Queue at the Great Pyramid entrance ranges from 5 min (8 am, weekday) to 60 min (11 am, Tuesday/Thursday cruise-bus wave). The optimizer picks a median; budget +20% for bad luck.
- Sunset alignment is about view, not about the sun touching the pyramid. In Cairo the sun never touches the pyramid face. What you want is the right pyramid in the foreground against a coloured sky, and your camera out of the crowd's way.
- Exit ramp matters. The plateau has four gates. If your last stop is the Sphinx, exit the south gate (closer to your taxi). If it's Khafre, exit the east gate. If your driver doesn't know, ask before you start.
- The cruise-bus wave is real. Three to four cruise coaches arrive between 10:15 and 11:00 on most days. The Great Pyramid interior queue triples. Avoid that window if interior is on your list.
Limitations
- Khufu Solar Boat Museum has moved. As of mid-2026 the boat is still on the south side of the Great Pyramid, but a planned move into a dedicated museum near the Sphinx entrance may shift your stop order. Verify on site.
- Interior closures. Khufu interior closes for cleaning 1-2 days a month without notice. Menkaure interior has been closed to the public since 2019 for restoration. The optimizer assumes interior is open; check the day's notice at the entrance.
- Khafre causeway. The causeway to the Pyramid of Khafre closes for restoration work some Wednesdays. The optimizer cannot predict that.
- Sound & Light schedule changes seasonally. English shows run 2-3 times per week, typically Saturday/Monday/Wednesday. Arabic shows run more often. Verify the calendar before you book.
- This is not a substitute for a guide. A licensed Egyptologist guide unlocks interior chambers, the Solar Boat interpretation, and pyramid symbolism. If you care about meaning, not just photos, hire one for half a day.
FAQ
Is the Great Pyramid interior worth the queue?
For most visitors, yes. The King's Chamber is a 9-metre granite box with nothing in it except acoustics and weight. If you are claustrophobic or have knee issues, skip it. The Queen's Chamber is more accessible but less iconic.
Should I take a camel?
No. Cameras at the equator-class tourist trap zone charge 50-300 EGP for a 30-minute ride and aggressively demand 10× the agreed price at the end. If you want a camel, hire a 4-hour ride to the panoramic point from your hotel and pay 600-800 EGP via your hotel.
Best month to visit?
November to February, weekday, 8 am. March and October are shoulder months. May to September is brutal at midday. Use the Climate Window Matrix for month-by-month numbers.
What if I'm solo and don't want a guide?
You can do Giza alone and have a fine time. The plateau is signposted, the Great Pyramid interior is a one-line queue, and the Sphinx is right there. Skip the camera/horse-hound vendor zone near the Great Pyramid by walking east along the causeway.
