What this solves
The felucca has a mythology problem. Tourists book a "sunset felucca" and end up either (a) sitting still because there's no wind, (b) being pulled by a motorboat in disguise (most "feluccas" in Aswan have a small outboard tucked under the sail), or (c) overpaying by 4-10× because the captain quotes a tourist price. None of these outcomes match the postcard. The honest comparison looks at five things: wind speed (the dominant factor), group size, time of day (sunset window), intent (photo vs. transit vs. botanical island stop), and the operator's license (orange bib).
This calculator takes those five inputs and tells you whether to sail, motor, or stay on shore. It also gives you the rip-off vocabulary: how to push back on a 1500 EGP quote when the honest price is 100-300 EGP per hour. We are not in the boat owner's lobby; we just want you on the right boat at the right price.
Three more notes that won't fit a 100-word answer. First, the felucca is the only single-day Nile vessel that gives the postcard photo; a motorboat gives you a fast transit and a noisy engine. Second, a mahmia (small motor) on a felucca is honest if disclosed; it is dishonest if silent. Third, the experience depends more on the captain than the boat. A good captain reads the wind and parks the boat under the lee of Elephantine; a bad captain motors full-throttle into a headwind and calls it "sailing". Ask around the dock before you board.
A useful detail: a "felucca ride" in the brochures is sometimes a 30-minute seated fleduca moored to the dock, with the engine running to keep it steady while you take selfies. That is not sailing. A real felucca ride has the sail up, the engine off (if any), and the captain trimming. If the sail is furled, you are on a docked motorboat pretending to be a felucca.
The calculator
How to read the result
- Wind is the dominant factor. Felucca sails properly at ≤15 km/h. Above 25 km/h, the boat parks. Between 15 and 25 km/h, the captain may push a mahmia (a small motor or a rower), and you'll be asked to pay the extra — fair warning is 100-200 EGP on top.
- Sunset light windows are short. Winter (Nov–Feb): 17:00-18:30 is the usable window. Summer (May–Aug): 18:30-19:30. Outside that window, the light is not what you came for.
- Orange bib is the SCA license. Required since 2018. No bib → unlicensed, uninsured, and possibly holding a different route than agreed. Walk away.
- Honest price is 100-300 EGP/hr for a 2-4 pax felucca. A 5+ pax boat costs 200-400 EGP/hr. Anything above 400 EGP is a tourist quote. Anything in USD is a scam.
- Motorboat price is 3-5× felucca. The advantage: any wind, fixed route, fast. The disadvantage: noise, no sail, no traditional photo.
- Group size >6 → motorboat. Feluccas cap out around 6-8 passengers for comfort; above that, the boat is cramped and the captain will motor most of the trip anyway.
- Safety: life jackets are usually absent. Most feluccas do not carry them; if you are worried, ask before boarding. The river between Aswan and Luxor is calm (no flat, no rapids, no current to speak of), but the deeper risk is a fall between dock and boat during boarding. Bring non-slip shoes.
- Bring cash. Felucca captains rarely accept cards or mobile money. Have small EGP notes (50, 100, 200). The captain will also appreciate a 50 EGP tip for a job well done, especially at sunset.
FAQ
Why are felucca captains quoting 800-1500 EGP?
Three reasons: (1) foreigner-rate (illegal but common), (2) commission flow to the hotel desk that referred you, (3) the captain has overhead (dock fee, fuel, crew). None of those justify 1500 EGP for a 1-hour sunset sail. The honest number is 100-300 EGP. Walk to a different boat. If a captain quotes USD (10-30 USD), the bay is full of alternatives.
How do I push back on a high quote?
Three lines, in fact. (1) "What is your price per hour, per boat?" — the honest captain says 150-250 EGP. (2) "I have been quoted 150 EGP by another captain across the dock." — they'll match it. (3) Walk away once. The captain follows you. If they don't, take the next boat. The dock always has alternatives.
What's the best time for a sunset felucca?
Winter (Nov-Feb): 16:30 on the boat, 17:00 sailing, 17:30 golden hour, 18:00 return to dock. Plan a 90-min block. Summer: same logic shifted 90 min later. Avoid full-sun days (khamsin months Mar-Apr): the dust filters the light and the wind is unreliable.
Is a motorboat ride worth it?
Sometimes. If the wind is over 25 km/h, the felucca won't move and the motorboat is the only option. If you're transiting between two Aswan docks quickly (Philae landing to Elephantine, for example), a motorboat is faster and more reliable. If you want the postcard photo, take the felucca.
Can I take a felucca at Luxor?
Yes, but the Luxor felucca experience is different. The river is wider (less protected), the wind is stronger and more variable, and the photo background is less iconic than Aswan's Elephantine. Most Luxor felucca rides are 30-60 min. The honest price is similar: 100-300 EGP.
What's a mahmia on a felucca?
A small outboard motor or a rower used to push the boat when wind drops. Some feluccas have it built-in (the boat looks like a sailboat but the captain uses the motor when wind drops below 8 km/h). The fair rule: the captain should tell you before pushing the mahmia and the extra cost (100-200 EGP per hour of mahmia use) should be agreed upfront.
Can I stop on Kitchner's island?
Yes, with a felucca. The island is mid-river between Aswan and Elephantine. A felucca can drop you for 30-60 min; the entrance is 50-100 EGP. The botanical garden is small (mostly palms) but photogenic and quiet. The motorboat captains will refuse a stop here — the dock is too small.
What's a "felucca stand" at Aswan corniche?
A small wooden kiosk near the public ferry dock where felucca captains offer rides. The captains inside are honest; the ones who walk up to you on the corniche are usually quoted above 400 EGP. Walk to the stand yourself.
Is there a felucca at Luxor West Bank?
Yes, smaller. The West Bank felucca ride is along the Banana Island (a thin island mid-river from the West Bank ferry dock). Less iconic than Aswan but quieter. Honest price is similar (100-200 EGP/hr).

About
Pharaoh Compass is a small, ad-light, decision-grade toolkit. We don't sell tours, we don't take bookings, we don't take affiliate commissions. We make calculators. The felucca-vs-motorboat page started as a single photo from an Aswan sunset in 2024 that turned out to be a drift because the captain ran out of wind; the photo was a 90-minute wait for a still frame.
If your multi-day trip is built around a cruiser, the felucca becomes the day-experience at Aswan. If your multi-day trip is built around a dahabiya, the felucca is moot — you have your own sailing boat. The dahabiya-vs-felucca page covers the multi-day case.
