What this solves
Most Aswan days go wrong in two ways. First, the order: the cruise boat or the hotel suggests Philae in the afternoon, but Philae on Agilkia island is at its best in the morning — soft light, low tour-bus arrival rate, and the boat ride across feels right at 9 am rather than 3 pm. Second, the rip-off: a felucca captain quotes 800-1500 EGP for a "sunset ride around Elephantine"; the sane price is 100-300 EGP per hour. If you don't push back, you overpay by 4-10×.
This optimizer takes your arrival time, departure time, sunset priority, and time available (half-day or full-day), then builds a minute-by-minute plan: the right order, the right transport (taxi vs. on-foot), the right entry fee expectations, and a felucca price-checker so you can spot a green-card or a foreign-currency quote from a mile away. The plan assumes you have a private taxi or are willing to use Uber/Careem; the budget figures are at 2026 prices.
Two more practical details. First, the trip from Philae to the High Dam is short (~15 minutes) but the route is busy; tell your driver to use the corniche road, not the souk road, because the souk adds 25 minutes of crawling. Second, the visit to the Unfinished Obelisk happens in the open quarry, not in a museum; bring water, a hat, and sunscreen — the granite reflects heat back at you. Most "half-day" plans skip the obelisk, but the obelisk is the site that makes the most 20-year memory: the crack is the story.
The elephant in the room is the Nubian displacement history: the High Dam flooded Lower Nubia and required the relocation of ~100,000 Nubians in the 1960s. The Nubian Museum in Aswan tells that story with dignity. If you have time, the museum is worth 90 minutes; if you don't, the standard half-day plan still gives you the temples, the dam, and the obelisk. The two add up to the same Aswan everyone sees.

How to read results
- Philae comes first. The temple of Isis on Agilkia island is better in morning light and before the cruise-bus wave. A typical visit is 45-70 min including the motor-launch ride to the island. Bring sunscreen; shade on the island is limited.
- The High Dam is fast but politically loaded. The view platform is small, the visit takes 20-30 min, and entry is free (the ticket is bundled with the Philae ticket on most circuits). The Dam's car-car height is ~110 m above the lake surface. Don't swim in Lake Nasser; the water is cold (year-round 18-22°C) and the lake is deep and current-heavy.
- Unfinished Obelisk is in the Northern Quarries, near the airport. It is the largest known ancient obelisk (42 m, would-be 1,200 tonnes), still attached to the bedrock because it cracked during carving. ~80 EGP ticket. Allow 30-45 min.
- Nubian Museum is the sleeper hit. ~100 EGP, opened 1997, designed to look like a Nubian village. ~1.5 h. Skip it if you're on the half-day plan.
- Felucca: sane price 100-300 EGP per hour. Anything above 400 EGP is a tourist-quote scam. Wake at the "Captain's seat" near the Aswan souk and look for boats with the SCA orange bib; if the captain quotes USD, walk away.
- Transport: a private taxi for the day is ~700-1200 EGP from a hotel, slightly less from the street. The driver waits while you tour Philae and the quarry.
- Timing trap at Philae. The motor-launch back to the Aswan corniche runs on a ~20-min cycle and stops at sunset. A late afternoon Philae visit (~16:00) leaves you waiting 30 min for the last boat. Plan Philae for morning or midday, not late afternoon.
- Skip-the-line reality. The Philae ticket window has one queue (mixed). Foreigners pay a higher rate and go through the same line. Buy tickets at the motor-launch dock to save 10-15 min vs. buying at the temple island gate.
FAQ
What is the 2026 entry fee for Philae?
Approximately 120 EGP for the temple grounds. The motor-launch ride from the Aswan corniche to Agilkia island is 60-100 EGP per person (officials price it separately). Combined foreigner-ticket cost is 180-220 EGP. Egyptian/African residents less. Verify at the gate — fees were raised in 2024 and again in late 2025.
Is the High Dam worth it?
Yes, but barely. The visit is 20-30 min, the view is striking (Lake Nasser stretching south), and the Dam itself is a major piece of 1960s engineering. The political framing at the visitor center is one-sided; if you want to read the Nubian displacement history, that's elsewhere (Nubian Museum). Entry is bundled with no separate ticket — most circuits put the High Dam right after Philae because the geography flows that way.
Can I swim in Lake Nasser?
Technically yes, practically no. Water is cold year-round (18-22°C), the shoreline near the High Dam is rocky and current-heavy, and the lake is very deep. Some Aswan felucca captains will offer a "swim stop" on Lake Nasser in summer — accept only with a confirmed life-jacket and only with a captain who has done it before. Most travellers skip.
How do I know the felucca price is fair?
Three checks: (1) ask the captain how many feluccas are moored nearby and pick a busy spot — captains in slow zones quote higher. (2) Confirm the price is per hour, not per ride. (3) Walk away once after the captain counters with a smaller number (they always do). 100-300 EGP per hour is honest for a 2-4 person boat. Above 400 EGP is a tourist quote; above 800 EGP is a scam.
Should I take a guide at Philae?
Optional. The temple is well-signed and the layout is small (~30 min walk). A licensed guide costs 300-500 EGP and unlocks the Isis cult backstory. Skip if you've already seen Dendera or Karnak, both of which are larger and more typical.
Can I do all four in a half-day?
Yes if you start at 8 am. Philae 9:00-10:15, High Dam 10:45-11:15 (15 min from Philae), Unfinished Obelisk 11:30-12:15 (20 min from the Dam), Nubian Museum or Elephantine lunch 12:30-13:30. You will be back at your hotel by 2 pm. Skip the felucca on this plan; add it as a separate sunset slot.
What's the orange bib on a felucca?
The SCA (Supreme Council of Antiquities) boat-guide bib, required since 2018 for any felucca operating in protected waters around Aswan and Luxor. A captain without one is unlicensed, uninsured, and not following the SCA fee structure. Avoid.
Is there a guide at the High Dam?
No, and you don't need one. The visitor center has English-language panels covering the construction history and the technical specs. The view platform itself needs no interpretation; the lake speaks for itself.
What's the Aswan souk for?
The Aswan souk, on the corniche near the ferry dock, is small and specialised: spices, hibiscus tea, Nubian baskets, and the famous Aswan perfume-oil blends. Spend 30-45 min after Philae if you're interested. Vendors will quote 2-3× the right price; use the haggling logic from the Souq scale detection tool.

About
Pharaoh Compass is a small, ad-light, decision-grade toolkit. We don't sell tours, we don't take bookings, we don't take affiliate commissions. We make calculators. The Aswan half-day was the second tool after the Giza complex one — it answers a near-daily question from cruise passengers: "I have a half-day, what do I see?"
The Aswan plan pairs naturally with the felucca-vs-motorboat page: the half-day for the temples, the sunset felucca for the experience. Together they cover ~7 hours and the price-of-entry triangle (Philae 120 EGP, High Dam free, Unfinished Obelisk 80 EGP, felucca 200 EGP/hr honest).
