What this solves
Siwa Oasis is closer to Libya than to Cairo. The road from Cairo to Siwa runs roughly 770 km on a fast desert highway that is, on a good day, nine hours of driving. On a bad day (khamsin, fog, a checkpoint closure), it is eleven. A one-day "visit" to Siwa is impossible unless you live in Marsa Matrouh, because the transit alone eats the day. Two days is the minimum. Three is the version that lets you actually float in a salt lake.
The three routes travellers actually use in 2026 are: Cairo → Siwa direct by 4x3 (private transfer, ~6,000–8,000 EGP one-way for four passengers, the most expensive but simplest logistically); Cairo → Alexandria by bus or fly, then West Delta Bus to Marsa Matrouh, then Siwa shuttle or taxi (the budget route, around 800 EGP per person one-way in total but uses three different operators); and Cairo direct by public bus to Siwa (one bus, seven to nine hours, about 350 EGP, but the bus schedule is thin and the air conditioning is unreliable). This optimizer scores all three against your given days and start point and recommends one.

How to read results
- Total cost is round-trip per person, including transfers, in-Siwa hotel (1,000–2,500 EGP per night for a decent Siwan lodge), one main meal per day, and the Oracle Temple ticket (60 EGP) and salt-lake access (free, but driver-tip 200 EGP per 4x3).
- The route recommendation is the cheapest sensible option, not the absolute cheapest. The absolute cheapest (a public bus, three transfers, an overnight in Marsa Matrouh, a shared shuttle) saves ~3,000 EGP per person but eats a day.
- The 1-day option is flagged as impossible. That is not a joke. Cairo → Siwa is 770 km. Even at 100 km/h on the desert road, it is 7.7 hours. Round-trip is 15.4 hours. You would see a single Siwan sunset and immediately turn around.
- The Oracle Temple deserves its day. It is the place Alexander the Great walked to in 331 BC to be confirmed as pharaoh. It is also tiny and not photogenic in the way you might expect. Allocate an honest 90 minutes including the Siwan museum.
- Salt-lake float is the highlight, and you do not need to be a strong swimmer. You float, fully clothed, on your back, in a salt lake that is roughly 30% saline. The water is shallow (under 2 m). Bring a waterproof phone pouch and a change of clothes because the salt does not wash out of swimwear gracefully.
FAQ
Is a 1-day Siwa trip from Cairo actually impossible?
Effectively yes. Cairo → Siwa by car is 770 km and at least 9 hours of seat time. Sahara has nothing useful to look at on the way out, and the return is the same. You would arrive at noon, see one or two sites, sleep in the 4x3, and drive back. The brochure version of a "Siwa day trip" is actually "fly to Matruh + 4 h drive to Siwa + back" and you arrive Siwa at 11 am. Skip it.
Is the salt-lake float easy?
Yes, it is the easiest physical thing you will do in Egypt. The water is about 30% saline, denser than the Dead Sea, and you float the moment you lean back. The lake (Maraqi or Fatnas) is shallow (under 2 m). The catch: the salt crystallises on your swimsuit, your towel, and your camera strap. Bring a rinse bucket, a change of clothes, and a waterproof phone case.
Is the budget bus route actually survivable?
The Cairo → Siwa public bus leaves from Cairo West Bus Terminal (Turgoman or Mohandessin branch depending on operator). It is a single bus, around 7–9 hours, around 350 EGP. The catch: schedules are thin (often one morning bus only), the air conditioning is unreliable, and there is a single mid-route food break. If you have a budget and time, the bus is fine. If you have a budget but not time, fly to Alexandria + bus to Marsa Matrouh + Siwa shuttle is faster and around the same price.
Do I need a special permit for Siwa?
No separate permit. Siwa is not in the "protected" zone the way the White Desert or Gilf Kabir is. The Western Desert Mobile Police will check your passport at the oasis entry and may ask for a sat phone or local contact if you are self-driving. A guided tour removes that friction entirely.
Best month?
October through April. Siwa drops below 5°C at night from December to February, which is cold for a hot-spring holiday. Spring (March–April) is the khamsin risk window. May to September is brutal at 38°C+ midday and a salt-lake float at 40°C is not the relaxation it sounds like.
