What this solves
Most dive-cost pages online quote Sharm el Sheikh and Hurghada prices. Those are fine but they are roughly 30% more expensive than Dahab for the same certification level. Dahab is a Bedouin town of about 30,000 people on the Gulf of Aqaba. It has roughly 80 dive shops, 15 of which are worth trusting with your life and your logbook. The shore dives (Lighthouse, Eel Garden, Gabr El-Bayt) are 5 to 25 minutes by jeep from the centre; the boat dives to Thistlegorm or Ras Mohammed are 2 to 3 hours one-way and account for most of the price difference.
The second problem this page solves is the visa. Most travellers arriving at Cairo Schuttephart airport pay USD 25 for a single-entry visa and never realise they could have paid the same USD 25 for a Sinai-only stamp that lets them skip Cairo entirely. The Sinai-only visa is issued at Sharm el Sheikh, Taba, or sometimes Dahab airports and lets you stay up to 14 days within the Sinai resort zone (Sharm, Dahab, Taba, Nuweiba, St Catherine) without a full Egypt visa. The catch: you cannot leave Sinai. Cairo, Luxor, Alexandria are out.

How to read results
- All numbers are 2026 USD. Dahab shops quote in USD or EUR, both of which move with the Egyptian pound. The dollar price is the more stable reference.
- Shore dive = $25–35 per dive + $30–50/day kit rental if you don't have your own. Boat dive = $70–100 per dive, kit included, 2 dives per boat day, boat departs 08:00 returns 16:00.
- The Blue Hole is a shore dive with rules. The Arch is at 55 m. To dive it you must show a logbook with a deep cert (PADI Deep Diver, SSI Deep Diving, equivalent) and dive with a guide. Without the deep cert, you can snorkel or do the Bells' sill of milk-shaped shallows at 10 m, which is the iconic Dahab shore dive.
- The Sinai-only visa saves you a Cairo detour if your whole trip is Sinai. From the airport, you walk past the full-visa booth, look for the small Sinai-only window, pay USD 25 cash, get a 14-day stamp. You can renew once for USD 25 more if you stay 28 days.
- Thistlegorm is a 2-hour boat ride north. The wreck is a WWII British supply ship, sunk in 1941, full of trucks, motorbikes, and rifles. The dive is at 18 to 32 m, two dives per day, and is the wreck dive of the Red Sea. It must be booked through a Dahab or Sharm operator that has the Thistlegorm permit.
FAQ
Is Dahab actually cheaper than Sharm or Hurghada?
Yes. The same PADI OWD cert that costs USD 450–500 in Sharm costs USD 350–450 in Dahab. Shore dives are USD 25–35 vs. USD 35–50 in Sharm. Boats are about the same. The savings come from Dahab being a Bedouin town with lower hotel rates (USD 25–40/night for a clean double), cheaper restaurants, and dive shops competing on price instead of name brand.
What is the "AOW + Thistlegorm" math for 4 days?
AOW cert (2 days, 5 dives, classroom + confined + open water) ~ USD 300. Equipment rental ~ USD 100 for the cert days. Thistlegorm boat day (2 dives, kit, lunch) ~ USD 130. One extra shore dive day ~ USD 80 (2 dives + kit). Total ~ USD 610. Add 4 nights of USD 35 hotel = USD 140. Visa-less cost from Sharm airport Sinai-only stamp = USD 25. Total ~ USD 775. That is the genuine 4-day Dahab price.
Can I dive the Blue Hole Arch without a deep cert?
No. The Arch is at 55 m. To dive it you must show (a) a current deep-diver specialty cert (PADI Deep Diver, SSI Deep Diving, TDI Intro to Tech, equivalent) and (b) a logbook with at least 5 dives deeper than 30 m. Without that, every reputable shop will refuse the dive. The Blue Hole shore dive to 30 m (the Saddle, the Bells, the Shaab el-Falh) is reachable with OWD if you stay shallow.
What is the Sinai-only visa and who qualifies?
The Sinai-only visa (USD 25, 14 days, renewable once) is issued at Sharm el Sheikh, Taba, and sometimes Dahab airports to travellers whose entire trip is within the Sinai resort zone. You cannot enter Cairo, Luxor, Alexandria, or any Nile site. If your itinerary is "4 days Dahab, 4 days Cairo", do not use the Sinai-only stamp. Get the full visa at Cairo or apply online for the e-visa.
Best month to dive in Dahab?
March to May and September to November. June through August water is 29°C and visibility is 25 m; surface air is 35°C and uncomfortable in a 5 mm wetsuit. December to February water drops to 21°C and a 5 mm with hood is needed; visibility can exceed 40 m on calm days.
